For domain registration, all domain names are registered through reputable, ICANN-acredited registrars such as godaddy.com, aplus.net, dotster.com, register4less.com, and many other excellent services. These businesses specialize in domain-name registration, hosting, and related services. Once registration is complete and your domain name is configured properly, the registered account is transferred directly to the client, who is then responsible for long-term management, renewal payments, and so forth.

Typically, renewal payments are made in various yearly increments. For example, you may renew the domain every year, every two years, every ten years, and so on. Generally, modest discounts are applied for extended domain renewals. For example, last year I received a 10% discount for renewing a domain for five years.

Finally, it must be emphasized that, in order to retain ownership of your domain, you must renew payment before the annual (or biannual, triannual etc.) expiration date. Domains that are not renewed will be placed back on the market for other buyers.
